all were told we're told by a white house official discussing their various experiences with nelson mandela which span over three administrations. so quite a conversation you'd want to be a fly on the wall for. we are expecting, as well, that president obama may be touching base with nelson mandela's wife gra gracamachel, certainly something he's interested in doing. this is a such a logistical feat when you think of all these world leaders going to south africa and how big an effort this is to get president obama there. because mandela has been ill for so long, unfortunately, this is something they had some time to plan for. >> there could be a little diplomatic awkwardness on the podium. the program has been released by the south african government. we see president obama will pay special tribute. these are tributes by foreign dignitaries. six selected. the leaders from the u.s., brazil, the haven't of china, namib namibia -- libya and president raul castro of cuba will be up on the same stage with the president of the united states. i wonder if they'll shake hands, exchange words

obama care. didn't vote for the stimulus bill or dodd frank. it was other stuff. the point was here is the data point and this is what has many people, the gerrycommander has split the house. people on the far right and far left because the districts are drawn all republican and all democrat. in the senate it is two things. the fact that no one votes in primaries which is the point i'm about to make and the role of big money. you asked me what changed. a case decided by the supreme court which allows unlimited amounts of money to flow into campaigns. here is what happened to dick luger. this was not a secret election. there were millions of dollars spent. a big election. everyone knew there was an election coming up. the voter turnout in that primary? 18%. fewer than one in five eligible republicans voted. it would be the same way if we had a democratic primary. who are the 18%? they tend to be the most partisan, the most idelogical. people are mad about something. if we could get the voter turnout up to 40% in primaries i think you would have a little different result. right now th

that hard-won deal, at least potentially. jim sciutto is watching what's going on. i know the obama administration is very concerned what these members of the senate are planning on doing. >> no question. this puts congress on a direct collision course with the white house. as you know, they have been lobbying hard, the administration has been lobbying hard against it, secretary kerry, including sending a video message over the holidays arguing against sanctions, saying that will in effect scuttle this deal. what we're seeing now, that intense lobbying campaign appears to have fallen on deaf ears, even among members of the president's own party. with the ink barely dry on the historic nuclear deal with iran, today the iranian foreign minister pronounced it dead if congress passes more economic sanctions. the entire deal is dead, he told "time" magazine. we do not like to negotiate under duress. even so, sources tell cnn republican and democratic senators are close to doing exactly that, nearing agreement on a bill to impose new sanctions within six months unless iran ships all stock

news for the obama generation. with unemployment insurance set to expire, the white house is stuck in an ironic situation. they are arguing for an extension. if growth is improved, it was announced thursday and friday down to 7% unemployment, the lowest in five years. the administration says that unemployment insurance has got to be extended. white house spokesman jay carney made the case on friday afternoon. >> the news we have today eenforces that we need to address the problem and extend unemployment insurance benefits to those individuals. this is a persistent problem. it would be terrible to do that to more than a million families across the country a few days after christmas, that they are out of benefits. we hope congress will, as it has in the past, addressed the challenge. an interesting thing about the economic numbers, is they haven't improved the unemployment rate - it went down despite the gridlock in washington and the political head wind. you have to wonder how good the growth would be without the head wind or the government shutdown that threatened the economy over the
